KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast - also known as the Dolphin Coast due its large population of bottlenose dolphins - stretches for 100 kms north of Durban to the mouth of the Tugela River. This area of coastline is renowned for its balmy year-round climate, spectacular surf, and glorious beaches. While home to many high class resorts and residential areas, the North Coast has a wilder feel to the coastline south of Durban, especially in the far north. The sheltered bay has a designated launch site for ski boats with excellent off-shore angling, spear fishing, surfing, swimming and snorkelling.

Snorkeling in Cape Vidal has to be done at specific times only, this is due to rip currents during the incoming and outgoing tides. Best Times to snorkel is 1 hour before and after high tide. Their is a dedicated launch site for deep sea boats, please do ensure that your vessel is surveyed and does have all the required safety equipment at all times as you may be checked prior to launching. All vessels are also required to have fishing permits which are attainable from the St Lucia Post Office. Note that skippers are required to have additional permits please. The launch site in Cape Vidal also has a limited amount of vessels allowed to launch please do inquire at the launch office. It is also important to know how many fish species are allowed to be caught per angler.

Each year in October, hundreds of thousands of Barn Swallows arrive in South Africa after their long migration from Europe. Krantzkloof Nature Reserve

Krantzkloof Nature Reserve is Situated only 4 kilometres from the centre of Kloof. This reserve offers both coastal forest and grasslands, Molweni River runs right through Krantzkloof Reserve. It has been said that Krantzkloof Reserve was proclaimed in the year 1950 and covers 600 hectares. The wildlife here consists of zebra, bushbuck, vervet monkey, rock hyrax, blue, red and grey duiker, slender mongoose, white-tailed mongoose, egyptian mongoose, banded mongoose, water monitor and genet. As well as abundant birdlife currently over 200 species. The reserve has an interesting variety of indigenous plantation.

South Africa has one of the largest Estuary’s in Africa, its total length is approximately 85km South to North and 22km wide at its widest point.

Previously St Lucia town was known as St Lucia Estuary and is still today referred to as St Lucia Estuary. St Lucia Estuary is also much like a island and this is due to the fact that the town is surrounded by water on the left is the estuary and on the east side is the Indian Ocean.

he St Lucia Estuary ishome to more than 800 Hippo’s and about 1200 Nile crocodiles not to mention the abundance of birdlife. It is no wonder that the area was proclaimed as a world heritage in 1999 by Unesco. The St Lucia Estuary remains the top attraction as nowhere else has one the opportunity of experiencing such a diverse and magnitude of beauty, the various seasons contribute to migratory bird species. A bird lovers paradise and only 54km away lies the Mkuze game reserve most definitely one of the best birding areas in South Africa.

The St Lucia Estuary at present remains closed to the Indian Ocean primary due to the years of drought however new water been allowed into the estuary, a new cut on the banks of the Umfolozi River has contributed greatly to a renewed amount of water, when the Umfolozi River floods then water runs into the channel that feeds the estuary. This new addition to the water levels has shown a great increase in the levels from St Lucia up towards Charters Creek. This area previously almost dry completely now once again offers immaculate viewing of Flamingos and other species of birdlife.

Kite Surfing: When the wind whips up, many go home, but for die hard adrenaline freaks, Kite Surfing is the ideal way to clear the head, raise the heart rate and have jolly good fun in one. Wind direction determines where Kite Surfing will take place. Lessons are given at Umhloti Lagoon (between Ballito and Durban) in a South wind, north of Suncoast Casino in northerly wind.
